Day 4 at the Memphis Open brought a number of upsets, opening up the bottom half of the draw for a surprise finalist. The American 18 year old superstar Taylor Harry Fritz backed his talent against Steve Johnson, getting the first Top 30 win in his life. The other two seeds losing were a lot less surprising, with the eighth seed Damir Dzumhur losing to Berankis and the seventh seed John Millman losing to the German veteran Benjamin Becker. This really opens the draw for Donald Young, who is the only seeded player left in the bottom half, beating Marcel Granollers.
The biggest story of the day was definitely Taylor Fritz getting the biggest win in his career so far. With Fritz’s style of game, it would make sense that if he had a chance to beat a Top 30 player, it would be on the American indoor hard courts. This was Fritz’s tenth win in his last 12 matches. Despite the scoreline with two tie breaks, there were 2 breaks of serve on each side, especially Johnson had more opportunities on his opponent’s serve than he used. Johnson was serving better, getting 12 aces and forced Fritz to save a set point in the second set. Taylor Fritz will face Benjamin Becker in his first ATP Tour Quarterfinal. (WC) Taylor Harry Fritz – (2) Steve Johnson 7-6(5) 7-6(7).
The second American and only seeded player that advanced into the quarterfinals yesterday is Donald Young. Both
players had a weak start to the year, with Young’s only win before this match in 2016 was World No. 363, Finn Tearney. Granollers had more matches won under his belt, but it must be said that they 3 out of the 5 matches he won were at the challenger level. Young was very efficient on return. Whenever he would get a chance on his opponent’s serve, he broke 4 out of 5 times, unlike Granollers whose statistic was 2 out of 6. Young was also better in close games, winning 5 out of 6. Young’s quarterfinal opponent will be Ricardas Berankis. Despite this loss, Granollers still won 70% of his last ten matches with left handed players. (3) Donald Young – Marcel Granolllers 6-1 7-6(2).
The other two matches played were John Millman losing to Benjamin Becker and Ricardas Berankis taking the win over Damir Dzumhur. Becker showed a truly impressive performance on serve, getting 76% of first serves in, and facing only one break point during the match. The 34 year old’s quest to get back in the Top 100 after injury woes in 2015 is definitely helped by reaching this quarterfinal, in which he will be the higher ranked player against Taylor Fritz. However, the rankings of young players not often project their actual skills and playing capability. Berankis and Dzumhur are two quite similar players, similar age, similar height and they even have similar results in 2016 so far. For Berankis or Dzumhur, winning this match would have been the first time they won 2 matches in a row this year. Berankis was the one who succeeded in this match, as Dzumhur won only one of his seven break point opportunities. Benjamin Becker – (7) John Millman 6-2 7-6(6). Ricardas Berankis – (8) Damir Dzumhur 6-3 6-4.
