Jannik Sinner has his eyes on a historic first Roland Garros title in what has been an incredible clay court season for the Italian.
The world number one has won titles in Monte-Carlo, Madrid and Rome in order to enter Paris as the heavy favourite.
It’s been a long stretch for the Italian who has battled through the field and now sits on the brink of history.
Ahead of the two weeks Sinner has fended off concerns over fatigue and spoke about how he has rested before Paris, “It has been a very long but very positive period,” Sinner explained in his pre-tournament press conference to the ATP Tour.
“I’m lucky to be in this position. I think it’s always better to be in a position where you win and you start to feel tired than you feel very good but you lose a couple of rounds. I try to have a good balance now at the practice court. [I need to] understand also when to push and then hopefully be ready for the first-round matches… I think the excitement also helps you find a bit more energy during the tournament.
“I went to my parents’ place for a couple of days. Staying there and arrived yesterday [Thursday] during the day [in Paris]. I try to recover a bit. I am still trying to recover and hopefully I will be ready then for the first-round match.”
After last year’s mammoth defeat to Carlos Alcaraz in the Roland Garros final, it can be hard for Sinner to have positive memories of Roland Garros.
However Sinner is remaining upbeat as he looks to complete a career Grand Slam in Paris, “It’s a very special tournament for me, and it has been increasingly better year after year, and last year we were very close,” the Italian explained.
“But the feelings and the connection with the crowd was very nice. A lot of kids, which I really like to see. Of course I still think back to what happened, but still [I have] very positive feelings.”
There is no Alcaraz to stop Sinner this time as he will look to complete history on the red dirt of Roland Garros.
First up for Sinner will be French wildcard Clement Tabur.
