Holger Rune will return to action next month at an ATP 500 event in Germany, according to a statement issued by organisers on Thursday.

The former world No. 4 hasn’t played on the Tour since October, after tearing his Achilles tendon at the Stockholm Open. Shortly after the rupture occurred, he underwent surgery to resolve the issue before undergoing extensive rehabilitation that he has been documenting on social media.

A return date for the 22-year-old has now been confirmed. The first event of his comeback will be the Bitpanda Hamburg Open, which is set to get underway on May 19th. The tournament is held at the Am Rothenbaum, with Alexander Zverev and Andrey Rublev previously winning the title. It takes place a week before the French Open, for which Rune has yet to comment on whether he will be playing or not.

“The hard work starts in Hamburg,” Rune said in a press release.

“I can’t wait to be back on clay at the Bitpanda Hamburg Open and to finally experience the atmosphere on site again after such a long break.”

Rune will join the likes of Zverev, Flavio Cobolli and Félix Auger-Aliassime in this year’s edition of the Hamburg event.  The tournament has a prize money pool of €2,219,670.

“We are very pleased that Holger Rune will make his comeback with us in Hamburg,” Tournament Director Enric Molina Mur commented.

“I know how much work Holger has put into this intensive rehabilitation period, and we feel very honored that he has chosen the Bitpanda Hamburg Open to return to the Tour. I am confident that he will once again experience the special atmosphere at the Rothenbaum – both from the Hamburg crowd and from the many Danish tennis fans who will travel to Hamburg.”

So far in his career, 22-year-old Rune has won five ATP titles, including the 2022 Paris Masters. He is also a three-time Grand Slam quarter-finalist with career prize money earnings of more than $15.7M.
