Kamil Majchrzak says he felt ‘support from above’ during his marathon win at the Brisbane International that took place a day after it was confirmed a popular journalist from his country had passed away.
The world of tennis has been paying tribute to Damian Kust, who died earlier this week at the age of 26. Kust was known by many tennis fans for his extensive knowledge and coverage of the lower levels of men’s tennis, especially the Challenger Tour. He wrote for Last Word On Tennis, Tenis by Dawid and took part in various podcasts, including one for Cracked Rackets.
Kust’s death was confirmed on Tuesday by his family. He had been suffering from a rare autoimmune illness that required him to undergo multiple liver transplants. The exact details of his death have not been made public.
Majchrzak, who is currently ranked 59th in the world, sealed his place in the quarter-finals in Brisbane with a marathon 6-7(2), 7-6(7), 7-6(8), win over Reilly Opelka. Incredibly, the Pole withstood 44 aces from his rival before sealing victory in just over two-and-a-half hours
“Today’s match was one of those where, besides preparation and good play, you also need something more. I felt that in the key moments I had support from above,” Majchrzak wrote in Polish on his Instagram story.
“Damian left us far too soon. The world of tennis has lost not only a journalist, but above all a brilliant young man.
“Condolences to the family and loved ones.”
The tribute from Majchrzak is the latest from the tennis world. On social media platform X, players Ellen Perez, John Isner, Sebastian Korda, and Ivan Ljubicic have all paid their respects, as well as many from the tennis media industry. Something that emphasizes how valued Kust’s dedication and coverage of tennis was viewed by others.
