Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori upset top seeds Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool 7-5 6-3 to the delight of the Italian fans inside the Inalpi Arena at the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin.
Bolelli and Vavassori now are 1-0 in Peter Fleming Group of the doubles tournament. The Italian team lead 3-1 in the head-to-head matches against Cash and Glasspool.
Bolelli and Vavassori converted two of three break points they earned and did not drop their serve. The home players saved four break points in the first game of the opening set. Both teams went on serve until the 12th game when Bolelli and Vavassori earned the first break of the match to win the first set 7-5.
Bolelli and Vavassori broke serve in the sixth game of the second set to take a 4-2 lead. They rallied from 15-30 down in the seventh game to hold serve for 5-2. Vavassori earned a match point with a backhand passing shot in the eighth game but Glasspool saved it. Bolelli earned two more match points with a volley forehand and converted the first opportunity to seal the second set 6-3.
“Of course we are very happy. I think today we played a really solid match. We served very good and tried to return as many balls as possible, because we know the guys are serving really good. We tried to let them play most of the time and tried to play aggressive. Just fighting. We know all these matches are really tight and the match can change with one or two points. I think in the second set we stepped up and played more aggressive”, said Bolelli.
