Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego came back from one set down to beat his compatriot Flavio Cobolli 2-6 6-3 7-5 reaching the quarter finals at the Moselle Open in Metz.
Cobolli earned two breaks in the first and fifth games and served out at love in the eighth game to win the first set 6-2.
Sonego saved a break point in the first game of the second set before breaking in the fourth game to seal the second set 6-3.
Sonego earned the crucial break in the 11th game of the third set to win the third set 7-5 after a hard-fought match. Sonego has claimed just his top 30 win of the season.
Sonego, won the Metz title in 2022, will face either Hugo Gaston or Daniel Altmeier, who beat Arthur Rinderknech 6-4 6-4.
Cobolli won 31 matches during a successful 2025 season. The Italian 23-year-old player won two titles in Bucharest and Hamburg.
Alexandre Vukic saved two match points to edge Corentin Moutet 3-6 7-6 (8-6) 7-6 (10-8) improving to 2-0 in his head-to-head match points against the Frenchman. Vukic set up a second round match against Matto Berrettini.
Kyrian Jacquet rallied from one set down to beat Luca Van Assche 4-6 6-3 6-4.
Next Gen player Alexander Blockx came back from one set down to beat Italian qualifier Francesco Passaro 3-6 6-3 6-4. Blockx is fourth in the ATP Live to Jeddah. The Belgian will play at the Next Gen ATP Finals in Jeddah.
