Learner Tien overcomes Matteo Berrettini to reach the semifinal in Metz

Learner Tien came rallied past Matteo Berrettini 5-7 6-2 6-3 in their first head-to-head match to reach the second ATP Tour semifinal of his career. 

Both players went on serve until the 11th game when Berrettini earned the first break of the match to take a 6-5 lead. The Italian player served out with a hold at 15 to seal the first set 7-5. 

Tien broke twice in the second and eighth games to win the second set 6-2 forcing the match to the third set. 

Tien saved a break point in the third game of the decider to hold for 2-1. The US teenager earned the decisive break in the fourth game to take a 3-1 lead and served out the win on his first match point. 

Tien converted all three break points he earned. The 19-year-old US player became the youngest player from his country to score 30 match wins in one season since Andy Roddick in 2003 and the first American to achieve this feat this season. 

Tien set up a semifinal clash agains Vitaliy Sachko, who beat Clement Tabur 6-4 3-6 6-4.

Last year’s Metz finalist Cameron Norrie came back from one set down to beat French lucky loser Kyrian Jacquet 4-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-2 6-4 in 2 hours and 25 minutes. Norrie has reached his second semifinal of the season. 

Norrie broke serve in the fourth game to race out to a 4-1 lead in the opening set. Jacquet won five consecutive games including two breaks of serve to seal the first set 6-4. 

Both players went on serve in the second set en route to the tie-break. Norrie saved a break point at 4-4 before earning two mini-breaks to take a 7-2 lead. 

Norrie broke serve at love in the ninth game of the third set and served out the win in the 10th game. The British player is aiming to win his sixth tour-level title and the first since 2023 when he beat Carlos Alcaraz in the final in Rio de Janeiro.

“He surprised me a lot, He was mixing it up really well. A lot of slicing, then really aggressive at moments. His serve is really, really good. France has so many good players, so many different kinds of players. I really liked the way he competed and he could have easily won the match in the second set as well, but I managed to stay tough”, said Norrie. 

 Norrie will take on Lorenzo Sonego, who beat Daniel Altmeier 6-4 7-6 (7-0) in 2 hours and 3 minutes. Sonego earned the first break in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead before saving a break point in the sixth game. The Italian player won his next service games and served out on his first set point. 

Altmeier saved  a total of three break points in the ninth and eleventh games of the second set. Sonego fended off six set points in the 12th game. Altmeier earned a mini-break to take a 4-2 lead. Sonego pulled back in serve to draw level to 4-4. The Italian player earned another mini-break to seal the tie-break 8-6 on his second match point.
