Jannik Sinner beat Ben Shelton 6-3 7-6 (7-3) in 1 hour and 35 minutes to complete a perfect record of 3-0 in the Bjorn Borg at the Nitto ATP Finals. Sinner reaches the semifinal at the at the ATP Finals for the third consecutive year.
Sinner will take on Alex De Minaur in the first semifinal on Saturday afternoon. The 24.year-old Italian player has not dropped a set at the ATP Finals since losing the 2023 championship match against Djokovic. Sinner leads 12-0 in his head-to-head matches against De Minaur.
Sinner earned an early break in the first game of the opening set. The world number 2 player saved a break point in the fourth game before breaking serve in the ninth game to close out the first set 6-3.
Sinner served well in the second set and held a match point at 5-4. Shelton earned a match point at 5-4. Shelton saved it and held on his serve en route to tie-break. Sinner earned two mini-breaks to win the tie-break 7-3 extending his indoor winning streak to 29 consecutive matches.
“When you come here and win all three round-robin matches, you have to play at a very high level, which I’ve done. Serving very well in important moments has brought me to this point. It was a very special day playing in front of the home crowd, and against Ben it’s always a tough challenge. When he comes up with a huge serve, you cannot do a lot, so you have to accept it. My mental aspect has been great until now, so let’s see what’s coming”, said Sinner.
