Matteo Berrettini beat Giulio Zeppieri 6-4 6-2 in the all-Italian first round match to reach the Round of 16 at the BNP Paribas Nordic Open in Stockolm. Berrettini has achieved his second win since his come-back from injury.
Berrettini will take on number 4 seed Ugo Humbert.
Berrettini earned an early break in the first game of the opening set and held serve in the second game with a forehand inside-out. Zeppieri converted his second break-back point in the fourth game to draw level to 2-2 and saved a break point to hold serve for 3-2. Both players held on serve until the ninth game when Berrettini broke serve at 15 to take a 5-4 lead when Zeppieri made a forehand error. The 2021 Wimbledon finalist saved four break points to hold at deuce closing out the first set 6-4.
Zeppieri held serve at love in the first game of the second set. Berrettini won his first service game with a forehand passing shot down the line. Berrettini converted his third break point in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead, when Zeppieri made a forehand error. Berrettini consolidated the break with a hold at 15.
Berrettini broke at 15 in the seventh game to open up a 5-2 lead and closed out 6-2 on the first match point in the eight game.
Sweden’s Elias Yimer beat his younger brother Mikail Yimer 6-2 7-6 (7-4) in the eighth tour-level match between brothers since 1990 and the second in 2025 after Francisco Cerundolo played against Juan Manuel Cerundolo in Buenos Aires.
Elias Yimer earned two breaks in the fourth and eighth games to win the first set 6-2. The second set went on serve en route to the tie-break. Elias Yimer earned two mini-breaks to race out to a 5-1 lead. Mikail Yimer pulled one of the mini-breaks back for 3-5. Elias Yimer sealed the win on his second match point.
“Today, I would have been happy even if I lost I’m usually never crying. I don’t know what’s happening”, sad Elias Yimer.
Marin Cilic beat Next Gen 19-year-old Nikolai Budkov Kjaer 7-5 6-3. Cilic won 95% of his first serve points and fired 12 aces.
The first set went on serve until the 12th game, when Cilic broke serve on his second set point.
Cilic converted his fifth break point in the sixth game to take a 4-2 lead. The Croatian player sealed the win on his third match point.
