Matteo Berrettini battled past Cameron Norrie 7-6 (8-6) 6-7 (7-9) 6-4 in a marathon match after 3 hours and 15 minutes to reach the quarter match at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna.
Berrettini set up a quarter final clash against Alex De Minaur, who beat Filip Misolic 6-4 6-4.
Norrie saved an early break point in the first game of the opening set before breaking serve in the fourth game at deuce to take a 3-1 lead. Norrie held serve at 15 to open up a 4-1 lead. Berrettini saved four break points in the sixth game before breaking back in the seventh game. Both players held on their service games en route to the tie-break. Berrettini earned his first mini-break to take a 3-2 lead with a lob, but Norrie broke straight back to draw level to 3-3. Berrettini went up a second mini-break to take a 5-3, Norrie pulled back on serve to draw level to 5-5. Berrettini sealed the tie-break 8-6 on his second set point with an ace.
Both players went on serve in the second set en route to the tie-break. Berrettini squandered a match point at 9-8 in the tie-break before Norrie sealed the tie-break 11-9 on his fourth set point.
Berrettini earned a decisive break in the ninth game and sealed the win on his first match point.
