Joao Fonseca reaches the second semifinal of his career in Basel

Three of the four quarter finals at the Swiss Indoors in Basel ended in retirement. 

Brazil’s Next Gen ATP champion Joao Fonseca was leading Denis Shapovalov 3-6 6-4 4-1 when the Canadian player withdrew from the match due to a right knee injury. Fonseca earned two breaks in the third set and was preparing to serve at 4-1. 

Fonseca has reached his second ATP Tour-level semifinal and his first at ATP 500 level. The Brazilian player claimed his first title in Buenos Aires last February and achieved a win-loss record of 23-15. 

Fonseca will face Jaume Munar in the semifinal. 

Felix Auger Aliassime was forced to withdraw from the match after losing the first set 3-6 against Munar. The Canadian player won the ATP 250 title in Brussels to move to ninth in the ATP Live Race to Turin. 

Ugo Humbert edged past Reilly Opelka 7-6 (7-0) 6-4. Humbert has won a Tour-leading 22 matches indoors since the start of 2024. 

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina won the first set 7-6 (7-1) when Casper Ruud withdrew from the match due to an ankle injury. Davidovich Fokina reached his sixth semifinal of the season. Ruud received treatment from the physio due to an ankle issue. The Norwegian player won the ATP 250 title in Stockolm and was on a six-match winning streak.
