Jannik Sinner beat Flavio Cobolli 6-2 7-6 (7-4) to reach the quarter finals at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna. Sinner improved his perfect record to 17-0 against Italian players on the ATP Tour.
Sinner did not face a break point in the first set and earned two break points in the third and fifth games to take a 4-1 lead. The Italian player sealed the opening set on his fourth set point in the eighth game.
Cobolli saved a break point in the fifth game to hold serve at deuce for 3-2. Sinner earned three break points in the 11thgame, but Cobolli saved them. Sinner went up a mini-break with a forehand passing shot to take a 3-1 lead in the tie-break. Cobolli pulled back on serve to draw level to 3-3. Sinner earned a second mini-break to take a 5-3 lead when Cobolli made a mini-break and sealed the win on his first match point.
Jannik Sinner: “He has been playing an incredible season and has been improving week after week, so I was looking forward to this one. He was one of the Italians I had not played yet. He is a great talent and a great competitor and we both played some great tennis at times. I had some chances in the second but could not use them and that is tennis. I tried to stay in the moment and play with a great mentality and I am very happy with today’s match.”
Sinner will face Alexander Bublik in the quarter final. Bublik beat Sinner in Halle last June.
Lorenzo Musetti beat Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-3 6-4 after 1 hour and 33 minutes to reach his tenth quarter final this final.
Musetti saved a break point in the first game. The Italian player converted his first break point in the second game and held serve in the next game to take a 3-0 lead. Both players went on serve until the ninth game, when Musetti saved a break point. Musetti sealed the opening set 6-3 on his second se point.
Musetti earned an early break in the first game of the second set as Etcheverry made a double fault. Etcheverry saved a break point in the third game to hold serve for 1-2. Musetti went down 15-40 in the eighth game but he saved the second break point with an ace. The Olympic bronze medallist sserved out the win on his first match point in the 10th game.
Musetti set up a quarter final against Corentin Moutet, who upset Danil Medvedev 7-6 (7-3) 6-4. Moutet avenged his defeat against Medvedev, who beat the Frenchman in the Almaty final.
Moutet earned the first break in the first game and held serve in the second game to take a 2-0 lead. Medvedev broke back in the eighth game to draw level to 4-4. Both players went on serve en route to the tie-break. Medvedev earned a mini-break to take a 3-1 lead in the tie-break. Moutet won six consecutive points to win the tie-break 7-3.
Medvedev earned a break in the fifth game of the second game to take a 3-2 lead. Moutet broke twice to win three games taking a 5-3 lead. Medvedev broke back in the ninth game, as Moutet was not able to serve out the match at 5-3. Moutet sealed the win with a break on his first match point.
Corentin Moutet: “He is such a great player and I knew it would be intense. It was hard to come from Almaty to here. It was a long travel, jet lag and we did a big match in the final, so it was hard to recover. I am more than happy with my performance. I played very aggressively today. It is different conditions, but it is always a big, big challenge to play against Daniil.”
Alexander Zverev beat Matteo Arnaldi 6-4 6-4 in 87 minutes to reach his 12th quarter final this season. Zverev will face Tallon Griekspoor in the quarter final. Zverev earned his first break in the ninth game to win the opening set 6-4. The German broke in the third game to seal the second set 6-4.
