Emma Navarro upset number 1 seed Iga Swiatek 6-4 4-6 6-0 to reach her first WTA 1000 quarter final of the season at the China Open in Beijing.
Swiatek won the first two games with an early break to open up a 2-0 lead. Navarro bounced back by breaking twice to win the next four games before serving out the first set 6-4 with a hold of serve in the 10th game.
Navarro went up a set and a break in the third game of the second set to take a 2-1 lead. Swiatek broke back in the fourth game to draw level to 2-2. The Polish player broke for the second time in the 10th game to close out the second set 6-4 forcing the match to the third set.
Navarro broke three times to take a bagel win in the third set reaching her eighth quarter final of the season. Swiatek made 70 unforced errors, the second most in her career in a single WTA 1000 match.
Navarro set up a quarter final match against either Jessica Pegula or Marta Kostyuk.
Navarro joins her fellow compatriots Coco Gauff and Amanda Anisimova in the quarter final. This is the first time since the first edition of the China Open that three US players have reached the quarter finals.
