Defending champion Alexander Zverev beat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-2 6-4 to reach the quarter final at the Paris Rolex Masters a the Defense Arena.
Zverev converted his third break point in the third game of the opening set to take a 2-1 lead. The German player saved three break points in the fourth game to hold serve after five deuces. Zverev went up a double break on his fourth opportunity in the seventh game. The German player served out the opening set 6-2 on his second set point.
Zverev started the second set with an early break at 15 in the first game. Davidovich Fokina broke straight back in the second game to draw level to 1-1. Both players held on serve in the seventh game when Zverev converted his second break point to take a 4-3. The German player served out the win on his first match point.
Zverev set up a quarter final match against Danil Medvedev, who came back from one set down to beat Lorenzo Sonego 3-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-4.
Sonego earned two break points in the second game and converted his second opportunity after Medvedev made a backhand error. Sonego saved a break point in the third game with a volley to open up a 3-0 lead. Sonego held on his next service games to win the first set 6-3.
Medvedev earned two break points in the fourth game and converted his first opportunity. The Russian player faced two break-back points in the fifth game, but he saved them to open up a 4-1 lead. Sonego broke back at love in the seventh game. Sonego saved a set point in the 10th game to hold serve in the 10th game. Medvedev saved three break points in the 11th game. Sonego earned a 5-4 lead with a forehand passing shot, but Medvedev earned two mini-breaks to close out the tie-break 7-5.
Medvedev converted his second break in the fifth game of the third set to take a 3-2 lead. He held on his next service games and sealed the third set on his second match point.
