World number 56 Matteo Berrettini beat world number 40 Jaume Munar 6-4 6-2 in 1 hour and 36 minutes to reach the second round at the Japan Open in Tokyo.
Berrettini has achieved his first win since last May when he beat Jacob Fearnley in Rome.
Munar saved a total of three break points in the first and third games of the opening set. Berrettini faced three break points at 0-40 but he saved them before breaking serve in the fifth game at deuce. Berrettini faced three break points in the sixth game, but he held serve at deuce at deuce. The Italian player served out with a hold at 15.
Berrettini earned an early break in the first game of the second set. Munar earned two break-back points, but Berrettini saved them to hold serve. Berrettini went up a double break in the fifth game before serving out on his first match point.
