Hungarian qualifier Marton Fucsovics came back from one set down to beat Frances Tiafoe 3-6 6-1 7-5 at the Japan Open in Tokyo.
Tiafoe saved two break points in the fifth game before breaking serve in the sixth game to take a 5-2 lead. The US player closed out the first set after saving three break points in the ninth game.
Fucsovics broke twice in the second and fourth games to race out to a 5-0 lead and sealed the second set on his fifth set point.
Tiafoe saved three break points in the first game of the third set. Fucsovics earned a break in the seventh game to take a 4-3 lead. Tiafoe converted his third break-back point in the eighth game to draw level to 4-4. Fucsovics broke for the second time in the ninth game and served out with a hold at 15 in the tenth game. Fucsovics impoved to 3-2 in his five head-to-head matches against Tiafoe. Fucsovics climbed seven spots to world number 51 in the ATP Tour Ranking.
Fucsovics won the Winston Salem last month. He will face either Brandon Nakashima or Jordan Thompson.
Daniel Altmeier beat Denis Shapovalov 7-5 6-3 to achieve his fifth win of the season against a top 30 player.
Shapovalov earned the first break in the eighth game of the first set to take a 4-3 lead. Altmeier won four consecutive games to seal the first set 7-5. Altmeier broke twice in the first and ninth games to close out the second set 6-3.
