Holger Rune beat Ethan Quinn 6-4 6-2 to reach the quarter final at the Japan Open in Tokyo. Rune set up a match against Jenson Brooksby, who beat Luciano Darderi 7-6 (9-7) 6-1.
Rune reached the semifinal in Tokyo in 2024. The Danish player is aiming to win his second title this year after claiming the win in the final of the ATP 500 tournament in Barcelona last April.
Rune earned an early break in the first game and held at 15 to take a 2-0 lead. Quinn saved two break points in the third game to hold serve at deuce. Rune fended off a break point in the fourth game and held his next service games to close out the first set 6-4 with a hold at love.
Rune broke three times to race out to a 5-0 lead. Quinn pulled one of three breaks back in the sixth game and held serve at 15 in the seventh game for 2-5. Rune sealed the win on his first match point in the eighth game.
Rune is 14th in the ATP Live Race to Turin, more than 1000 points behind eighth placed Alex De Minaur.
“I really sharpened my focus in the start of the sets. I tried to hit quickly, it makes me more comfortable. He is a good player and has some weapons, but it was about trying to take them away from him and play on my terms and making fast starts made me feel better and made me relax more”, said Rune.
Brandon Nakashima beat Marton Fucsovics 7-5 6-3 to claim his 30th win of the season. Nakashima went up a break in the second game to race out to a 3-0 lead. Fucsovics converted his second break-back point after saving a set point in the ninth game. Nakashima earned his second break in the 11th game to win the first set 7-5.
Nakashima earned an early break in the second game. The US player held on his next service games and sealed the win on his second match point in the ninth game.
