Danil Medvedev beat world number 3 Alexander Zverev 6-2 6-3 in 1 hour and 22 minutes to extend the win-loss record to 14-7 in his head-to-head matches against his German rival, including five straight wins in the past two years.
Medvedev has achieved his first top 5 win on hard-court since November 2023.
The Russian player converted three of the four break points he earned during the match. He fired 18 winners to 14 unforced errors.
Zverev squandered a 40-0 lead in the fourth game of the first set and was broken when his forehand into the net. Medvedev saved four break points in the fifth game. Medvedev held his serve in the seventh game with a forehand winner and served for the first set at 5-3. The number 8 seed fired a powerful serve on his set point to seal the first set in 39 minutes.
Both players went on serve in the first six games of the second set. Zverev wasted game points at 3-3 and was broken when he sent a forehand wide on a break point. Medvedev held serve to 15 in the eighth game with an unreturned serve before breaking serve in the ninth game after Zverev made a forehand error to seal the second set 6-3.
Medvedev has reached the 60th tour-level semifinal of his career and his first since last June in Halle.
“It’s great, but I always want more. In the beginning of your career, numbers are important. When you achieve a lot, it’s more about just doing your best, and I haven’t been doing my best since some time, so I’m happy to be back in semis playing great, beating great opponent. I played great, I was controlling the game pretty well. I felt like I had all the chances.
