It was two completely different matches that decided who would compete for the women’s title at Wimbledon on Saturday.
Amanda Anisimova edged out top seed Aryna Sabalenka in a two-and-a-half-hour roller-coaster to become the youngest American woman to reach a Wimbledon final since Serena Williams in 2004. Anisimova is also the first player in the Open Era to reach the title match at The All England Club 12 months after playing in the qualifying tournament.
In contrast, Iga Swiatek dropped just three games against Belinda Bencic in what was arguably her best performance at Wimbledon yet. She now has a shot at becoming one of the very few players to have won a major trophy on three different surfaces.
Meanwhile, the men’s semi-finals will get underway on Friday with two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz up against Taylor Fritz. Then it will be Novak Djokovic against Jannik Sinner in what could be a mouthwatering clash if both players are fully fit.
