Tuesday at Wimbledon saw the first group of players secure their places in the last four of the grass-court major.
Aryna Sabalenka had a turbulent time during her roller-coaster three-set win over 37-year-old Laura Siegemund, who is the oldest woman in the Open Era to make her last-eight debut at the tournament. It was a much easier journey for Amanda Anisimova, who beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in straight sets. It is a dream run for the American who lost in the qualifying rounds 12 months ago.
In the men’s draw, Carlos Alcaraz eased his way past Cameron Norrie with relative ease. His reward is a showdown with Taylor Fritz, who beat Karen Khachanov.
As for the other half of the draw, there are still questions over the current fitness of Jannik Sinner, who was nursing an elbow injury during his latest match against Grigor Dimitrov. The Italian had a hitting session scheduled for 4pm but cancelled it and played on an indoor court instead, away from the eye of the world’s media. This only adds more intrigue as to what shape he will be in heading into his clash with Ben Shelton.
