Alexander Zverev could collide with Joao Fonseca in the opening stages of the Masters 1000 event in Toronto.
As 14 of the world’s top 20 are absent from Canada, the next fortnight in Toronto will be a field full of opportunity for many of the players.
One player who will see this as an opportunity is Australian Open finalist Alexander Zverev who is the top seed in Canada.
The German has had a rather underwhelming season so far and will be making his first appearance on the tour since his opening round exit at Wimbledon.
First up for Zverev will be either Adam Walton or Benjamin Bonzi before a potential blockbuster third round with Joao Fonseca.
Also in Zverev’s section of the draw is defending champion Alexei Popyrin with the Australian being the 18th seed at this year’s tournament and could face Daniil Medvedev in the third round.
Also in the top half of the draw is Holger Rune, Casper Ruud and Lorenzo Musetti while Vasek Pospisil will face a qualifier in the first round of the last tournament of his career.
In the bottom half of the draw Frances Tiafoe and Cameron Norrie are scheduled to meet in the third round in a rematch from their Wimbledon match which Norrie won in four sets.
There is a potential third round between Alex De Minaur and Stefanos Tsitsipas, who recently sacked Goran Ivanisevic as his coach.
Arthur Fils will make his return to the tour after being injured at Roland Garros and could face Jiri Lehecka in the third round.
Meanwhile second seed Taylor Fritz will face either Roberto Carballes Baena or Camilo Ugo Carabelli in his first match with home favourite Gabriel Diallo awaiting in the third round.
