Injury-stricken Nick Kyrgios has pulled out of the Wimbledon championships after suffering a minor setback in his recovery.
Kyrgios has been hindered by injury problems throughout his career and has been troubled by a knee problem in recent months, which has sidelined him from action since March. Earlier this season, he returned to competitive tennis at the Brisbane International following an 18-month injury-related break. He also played at the Australian Open, Indian Wells and Miami. However, the Australian won just one match during this period which was against Mackenzie Mcdonald in Miami.
“I’ve hit a small setback in my recovery and unfortunately won’t make it back for grass season this year,” Kyrgios posted on social media.
“I know how much you’ve all been looking forward to seeing me out there, and I’m genuinely sorry to disappoint. This is just a bump in the road though, and I’m already working hard to get back stronger than ever.”
It is the third year in a row that the 30-year-old has been forced to miss Wimbledon. At the tournament he produced the best Grand Slam result of his career so far by reaching the 2022 final before losing to Novak Djokovic in four sets. Kyrgios also reached the quarter-finals of both the Australian Open and US Open during his career.
So far in his career, Kyrgios has peaked at a ranking high of 13th and has earned $12,648,790 in prize money. The Australian has won seven ATP titles in singles and another four in doubles.
It is unknown as to when Kyrgios hopes to return to the Tour.
