Alexander Zverev came back from one set down to beat Lorenzo Sonego 3-6 6-4 7-6 (7-2) to advance to the quarter final at the ATP 500 in Halle.
Zverev set up a quarter final match against this year’s Hamburg ATP 500 champion Flavio Cobolli, who beat Denis Shapovalov.
Sonego converted his only break point in the seventh game of the first set to take a 4-3 lead. Zverev struggled to break Sonego’s serve. Zverev broke serve in the 10th game to win the second set 6-4 to level the score. Both players went on serve in the third set. Zverev earned two mini-breaks to win the tie-break of the third set 7-2 after 2 hours and 23 minutes.
Zverev hit 33 winners and 18 unforced errors, 10 aces and won 82% of his first serve points.
Tomas Martin Etcheverry battled past Andrey Rublev 6-3 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (8-6). Etcheverry saved two match points in the tie-break of the third set to set up a quarter final match against Karen Khachanov.
