Richard Gasquet’s tennis career is over after a 6-3 6-1 6-4 defeat to Jannik Sinner at Roland Garros.
The Frenchman ended his career in fitting fashion on the main court of his home court at Roland Garros but ultimately fell short in his bid to cause an upset.
It was a professional performance from the world number one who broke early in the opening set and for most of the contest took control of the match.
A late revival from Gasquet was produced in the opening set as he had a good opportunity to get back on serve towards the latter stages of the opening stanza.
However, Sinner remained calm and capitalized on a couple of unforced errors from Gasquet to claim the opening set.
In the second set Sinner was utterly dominant as he powered past a fatigued looking Gasquet with the Italian cruising through the second set.
The third saw a more vintage performance from Gasquet with that trademark backhand continuing to cause problems from Sinner.
The world number one responded in emphatic fashion but was still struggling to break Gasquet down.
At the end, Sinner’s qualities showed as he broke in the ninth game and booked his place in the third round with a comfortable hold and will now play Jiri Lehecka.
The day belongs to Richard Gasquet as a tribute on Court Philippe-Chatrier unfolded to commemorate his 20 year career.
