Paula Badosa has revealed details of how bad her back injury is after she withdrew from the Mutua Madrid Open.

The Spaniard has struggled with a back injury over the last couple of years but the problem has got worse recently after she withdrew from the Miami Open.

Badosa was hoping she would be fit for her scheduled second round match against Veronika Kudermetova.

However, Badosa had to withdraw from the tournament due to the injury as she missed out on the opportunity of competing in front of her home fans.

Speaking about her injury Badosa revealed how her back injury has affected her nerves and the injections she had to receive, “My back is good, slowly getting better,” Badosa told the WTA website.

“It’s been a tough injury, honestly, this one because it was totally different from the last one. It was an injury that was touching the nerves, so I was constantly having pain. My normal life was a disaster, honestly — I couldn’t even move from the couch.

“But I was lucky that the treatment, the injections that I had to do a few have worked. So, slowly getting back there, yeah. But I was lucky that the treatment, the injections that I had to do a few have worked. So, slowly getting back there, yeah.”

Badosa was on the verge of the world’s top ten last year and reached the Australian Open semi-finals this year, losing to Aryna Sabalenka.

Since then the Spaniard has played minimal tennis and will now look to get back to full fitness ahead of Rome and Roland Garros.
