Matteo Berrettini beat Argentine Mariano Navone 6-4 6-4 in 1 hour and 48 minutes to reach the second round at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters.
Berrettini set up second round match against number 1 seed Alexander Zverev.
Berrettini did not convert a break point in the first game. The Italian player saved three break points to hold serve at deuce in the second game before breaking serve at 15 to take a 2-1 lead. Navone broke straight back to draw level to 2-2. Berrettini earned a second break point in the seventh game to take a 4-3 lead. Berrettini earned a chance to serve out the first set, but he had to save a break point before closing it out 6-4 on his second set point.
Berrettini broke serve at 30 in the first game of the second set. The Italian player went up a double break in the fourth game to open up a 4-1 lead. Navone pulled both breaks back in the sixth and eighth games to draw level to 4-4. Berrettini converted his fourth break point in the ninth game to take a 5-4 lead and served out the 57-minutes second set 6-4 on his first match point.
