Belinda Bencic has been surprised by her form since her comeback to the tour as she prepares to take on Amanda Anisimova at Indian Wells.
It has been quite the return to the WTA tour for Bencic since becoming a mother to her daughter Bella.
The Swiss entered the ITF tournaments to build her confidence towards the end of last year and that strategy has paid off.
This year Bencic has reached the fourth round of the Australian Open and to top it off won the WTA 500 title in Abu Dhabi.
Speaking at Indian Wells Bencic admitted her form since her comeback has surprised her and spoke about building her confidence up on ITF level, “I definitely didn’t anticipate the comeback being so successful and so early. But of course I’m going to take it,” Bencic told the WTA website.
“I feel like it helped me a lot to play some lower events last year. Just to start to play a little bit, see where my level is. Also figure out everything — logistics, how I feel on the court. That gave us a little bit of a direction of what we can work on more before Australia. Then obviously, very happy with the results right now.”
It’s been a fantastic return for Bencic and may not have been possible if not for the WTA’s support and the WTA plans to help mothers out even more.
This is because they are launching their new maternity initiative and Bencic thinks this will help lower ranked players, “It’s absolutely giving players the chance to not have to make such a hard decision,” Bencic stated.
“Especially for lower-ranked players, it’s important for them to have a guaranteed income so they don’t have to stress about things when they’re out for a year and a half. Tennis is the first sport to do this for female athletes, so I hope it paves the way for other sports as well.”
Bencic will hope to continue her good form against Amanda Anisimova in Indian Wells.
