Nicholas Jarry rallies from one set down to beat Juan Manuel Cerundolo in Rio de Janeiro

Sixth seed Nicolas Jarry came back from one set down to beat Argentine qualifier Juan Manuel Cerundolo 4-6 6-3 6-4 in their first head-to-head main draw match on the ATP Tour in 2 hours and 26 minutes reaching the second round at the Rio Open. 

Cerundolo broke serve in the third game to take a 2-1 lead. Jarry saved two break points to hold serve at deuce in the fifth game. Cerundolo held on his next service games to win the first set 6-4. 

Cerundolo converted his second break point in the first game of the second set. Jarry broke straight back in the second game to draw level to 1-1. The Chilean player earned his second break in the fourth game and held serve at love to open up a 4-1 lead. Cerundolo saved five set points to hold serve at deuce in the eighth game for 3-5. Jarry served out on his second set point. 

Jarry converted his second break point in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead and served out the win on his second match point in the 10th game. 

Jarry bounced back from his last week’s defeat to Diego Schwartzman last week in Buenos Aires. 

Jarry reached two semifinals in Rio de Janeiro in 2018 and 2023. The Chilean player fired 12 aces and converted 3 of his 12 break points. 

Jarry set up a second round match against Argentina’s Francisco Comesana, who battled past Gustavo Heide 7-6 (2-7) 6-7 (7-9) 6-3 after 3 hours and 21 minutes. 

Chun Hsin Tseng edged past Chile’s Alejandro Taabilo 6-2 7-5. 

“Today I was playing really good from the baseline and before the match I was pretty excited to play such a great player like Tabilo. I was really looking forward to the match and just prepared really good before the match and just tried to play my best tennis on the court.”, said Tseng. 

Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro came back from one set down to beat Facundo Diaz Acosta 3-6 6-3 7-6 (7-3) in 2 hours and 40 minutes. 

Jaume Munar, who reached two semifinals in Hong Kong and Dallas, converted five of his seven break point to edge past Thiago Seyboth Wild 6-4 3-6 6-0. Alexander Schevchenko broke serve six times in his 6-4 6-2 win over Felipe Meligeni Alves.
