This year’s Australian Open quarter finalist Lorenzo Sonego beat Botic Van de Zandschulp 6-1 3-6 6-3 to reach the second round at the Open 13 in Marseille.
Sonego will face a second round against the winner of the all-French match against Luca Van Assche and Benjamin Bonzi.
Sonego broke twice in the second and fourth games to race out to a 4-0 lead. The Italian player rallied from 0-30 down to hold serve in the fifth game for 5-0. Sonego served out the first set with a hold at 15.
Van de Zandschulp broke serve at 15 in the second game and held serve to take a 3-0 lead. The Dutch player saved two break points in the fifth game and one more chance in the seventh game. Van de Zandschulp served out the second set with a hold at love.
Sonego broke in the second game to open up a 3-0 lead and held his next service games to take a 5-3 lead. Van de Zandschulp saved three match point but Sonego converted his fourth chance to win the third set 6-3.
Otto Virtanen came back from one set down to beat Sebastian Korda 6-7 (3-7) 7-6 (7-4) 6-4.
Virtanen hit 46 winners and saved three break points.
Virtanen broke serve in the third game to take a 2-1 lead, but Korda broke straight back to draw level to 2-2. Both players held on their next service games en route to a tie-break. Both players traded mini-breaks to draw level to 2-2 in the tie-break. Korda won five of the next six points with two mini-breaks.
Virtanen broke serve in the sixth game to take a 4-2 lead, but Korda broke straight back and held serve to draw level to 4-4. Virtanen saved two break points at 4-4. Virtanen earned an early mini-break to take a 2-0 lead. Korda pulled back on serve for 4-5, but Virtanen won the final two points to clinch the tie-break 7-4.
Virtanen earned the first break in the first game of the third set to take a 2-0 lead. The Finnish player saved three break points to hold serve in the fourth game for 3-1. He won his next service games and sealed the win on his first match point.
Virtanen set up a second round match against either Luca Nardi or Daniel Altmeier.
Hamad Medjedovic beat Raphael Collignon 6-3 6-4. Medjedovic saved each of the five break points he faced. The Serbian player converted his fifth break point in the fourth game to take a 3-1 lead. He saved three break points to hold serve at deuce. Collignon fended off two break points in the sixth game. Medjedovic served out on his third set point after saving two break points in the ninth game.
Medjedovic converted his second break point in the third game to take a 2-1 lead. He served out on his first match point.
