Tomas Machac battled past Reilly Opelka 3-6 7-6 (7-1) 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 to reach the third round at the Australian Open.
Opelka converted her second break point in the fourth game and held his next service games to seal the opening set 6-3. The next three sets went on serve with no breaks of serve and were decided by tie-breaks. Machac won two tie-breaks in the second and fourth games. The fifth set followed the server’s order until the ninth game when Machac converted her third break point to take a 5-4 lead and served it out at 30 in the 10th game.
Machac set up a third round match against Novak Djokovic, who beat Jaime Faria 6-1 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 6-2 to continue his quest for a 25th Grand Slam singles match and his 100th tour-level title. Machac beat Djokovic in Geneva last year.
