Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori beat Nuno Borges and Francisco Cabral 6-4 7-6 (7-4) to book their spot in the semifinals at the Australian Open in Melbourne. Bolelli and Vavassori have extended their winning streak to eight consecutive match wins. They started the 2025 season with a title at the ATP 250 in Adelaide earlier this month.
Bolelli and Vavassori saved each of the three break points they faced and needed one break in the third game of the first set to win the first set 6-4. Both teams went on serve with no breaks of serve en route to the tie-break. Bolelli and Vavassori earned a mini-break to take a 3-2 lead. Borges and Cabral pulled back on serve to draw level to 3-3. Bolelli and Vavassori sealed the tie-break 7-4 with their second mini-break.
The Italian doubles team, who finished runner-up to Matthew Ebden and Rohan Bopanna in the Australian Open final in 2024, set up a semifinal match against Andre Goransson and Sem Verbeek, who overcame Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic 6-3 4-6 6-3.
Arevalo and Pavic did not convert three of the four break points they created.
Goranson and Verbeek broke serve in the 10th game to win the first set 6-3. Arevalo and Pavic earned an early break in the first game to win the second set 6-4. Goranson and Veerbeek broke in the second game to take a 2-0 lead. Arevalo and Pavic were not able to convert a break point, when Goranson and Verbeek were serving for the match at 5-3. Goranson and Vebreek sealed the win on their first match point.
“Goranson and Verbeek are playing well. We played against them at the US Open. There is nothing for granted. We will play our match. Today we played a good match. We had a good tie-break despite some problems on return”, said Bolelli.
“Last year we were underdogs. This year were number three seeds. The best is yet to come”, said Vavassori”.
