Shang Juncheng cruised past Spaniard Pedro Martinez 6-3 6-1 to move into the quarter finals at the Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Open. Shang Juncheng reached the semifinal at this tournament last year.
The Chinese player hit 28 winners and saved all six break points he faced to set up a match against either Andrey Rublev or Fabian Marozsan.
Martinez saved two break points in the second game to hold serve at deuce. Shang fended off two break points before breaking serve in the eighth game to win the first set 6-3. He broke three times in the first, third and seventh games to win the second set 6-1.
Shang has become the first Chinese player to break inside the top 100 in the ATP Ranking last May. He reached a career-high of world number 47 after winning the first ATP Tour title of his career In Chengdu.
“It is very enjoyable playing here. It is good to be back in Hong Kong with the amazing fans and fans. It has been a good start to the season”, said Shang Juncheng.
Olympic bronze medallist Lorenzo Musetti beat Gabriel Diallo 6-4 6-3.
Musetti set up a quarter final match against Spaniard Jaume Munar, who beat Portugal’s Nuno Borges 6-3 7-5. Musetti is aiming to win his first ATP Tour title since 2022.
Musetti saved two break points in the second game of the opening set before breaking serve in the third game with a forehand down the line winner to take a 2-1 lead. Diallo saved two break points in the seventh and ninth games. Musetti served out the first set with a hold at love in the 10thgame.
Diallo saved an early break point in the first game of the second set. Musetti broke serve in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead with a backhand down the line. Diallo saved two double break points with an inside-out forehand and an ace. Musetti earned a double break in the ninth game to seal the second set 6-3. “I felt very well in training and during the doubles match. The first match was tough. I am happy that I played very well today”, said Musetti.
