Age is just a number in the eyes of Gael Monfils who continued his winning run at the Australian Open.
Monfils, who is the oldest player in the ATP top 100, proved that he is capable of outlasting those who are more than 10 years younger than him with an epic 7-6 (7), 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-7 (5), 6-4 win over compatriot Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. Impressively the 38-year-old Tour veteran didn’t face a single break point throughout the 230-minute clash, winning 84% of his first service points and hitting 68 winners. A clinical display against a player who is regarded as one of the biggest hitters in the men’s game.
“When you play a guy like Giovanni, John (Isner), Reilly (Opelka), the main focus is your serve. That’s the main focus because you are under pressure at that moment,” he explains.
“So many points you need to play smarter, you need to get your focus to be in a way that you’re not facing breakpoint.
“Today I was able to do it with some very good service games, some fortunate points that help. But the focus was there and I was happy with that.”
Monfils is currently on a six-match winning run after claiming a historic title at the ASB Classic last week where he became the oldest-ever ATP champion. In Melbourne, he is making his 19th appearance this year and his 65th in a major overall. When he made his debut at the 2005 Australian Open, men’s world No.3 Carlos Alcaraz was only 19 months old.
A lot of focus has been made on Monfils’ age but he swiftly dismisses the hype around it.
“I know this week I can sometimes be double the age of the guy. I think I have 21 years of career, and he’s 21 years old, Giovanni. Of course, numbers are there, but I’m fighting, so I try not to put any number in my head.” He said.
The tennis star is currently relishing his time on the Tour which he is able to do with his family. His wife Elina Svitolina is playing in the women’s draw and is seeded 28th.
“I’m lucky to be here. My wife is playing. My daughter is waiting for me. I’m happy with my life,” Monfils commented.
“I won this match. I’m crazy happy. I have another chance to come out and play in a packed stadium. Everything is a win now, so, you know, no pressure on me.”
Novak Djokovic is the only player to have beaten Monfils so far this year which was at the Brisbane International. Monfils will next play Germany’s Daniel Altmaier.
