Herri Heliovaara and Henry Patten beat Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori to win their second career Grand Slam title in Melbourne

Herri Heliovaara and Henry Patten came back from one set down to beat Andrea Vavassori and Simone Bolelli 6-7 (16-18) 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 after 3 hours and 4 minutes in the final of the Australian Open claiming their second Grand Slam title as a team. 

Bolelli and Vavassori broke serve in the first game. Heliovaara and Patten pulled the break back in the 10thgame to draw level to 5-5. 

Heliovaara and Patten held three consecutive set points at 6-5 0-40 in the first set before Bolelli and Vavassori reeled off five consecutive points to force the set to the tie-break. Heliovaara and Patten squandered 10 set points in the tie-break. Bolelli and Vavassori converted their sixth set point when Bolelli hit a forehand winner to seal the tie-break 16-14 after 87 minutes. Bolelli was aiming to win his second Australian Open title after his triumph with Fabio Fognini in 2015. Bolelli and Vavassori finished runner-up to Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden in the Australian Open final last year. 

Both players went on serve en route to tie-break. Heliovaara and Patten earned the only mini-break to clinch the second tie-break 7-5. 

Patten and Heliovaara broke serve in the second break to open up a 3-0 lead. They saved three break points to hold serve on their first match point. “What an evening. What an amazing match. For Harri, what a journey we have been on. It’s been truly special so let’s keep it going”, said Patten.
