Alexander Zverev beat Pedro Martinez 6-1 6-4 6-1 in 1 hour and 54 minutes on Rod Laver Arena to reach the third round at the Australian Open in Melbourne for the eighth time in his career. Zverev won 77% of net points and saved all six break points he faced.
Zverev earned his first break in the second game to open up a 3-0 lead. The German player saved four break points before breaking at love in the sixth game to win the first set 6-1.
Zverev saved two break points in the second game of the second set. Martinez fended off three break points in the fifth game. Zverev served it on his second set point.
Zverev broke three times in the first, fifth and seventh games to win the third set 6-1.
Zverev set up a third round match against Jacob Fearnley, who rallied from one set down to beat Arthur Cazaux 3-6 7-5 6-2 6-3. “Usually I play 7-6 in the fifth set to entertain you guys a bit, but I am getting older so I have to shorten things up a little bit. I really like playing night matches here, I think the atmosphere is even better night”, said Zverev.
