Jordan Thompson came back from one set down to beat Matteo Berrettini 3-6 6-3 6-4 at Pat Rafter Arena in Brisbane after 2 hours and 15 minutes.
Berrettini earned his first break in the fourth game to take a 3-1 lead. Thompson saved two double break points in the sixth game. Berrettini served out at love in the ninth game.
Thompson broke serve in the second game of the second set. Berrettini broke straight back in the third game. Thompson broke again in the sixth game and fired two aces at 30-all to take a 5-2 lead. He served out for the set to take the match into the third set.
Thompson earned a break in the fifth game when Berrettini made a double fault and sealed the win on his first match point.
Thompson, who beat Rafael Nadal en route to the semifinals in Brisbane last year, will take on Alex Michelsen, who saved a match point and coverted on his fifth chance to beat Christopher O’Connell 6-4 4-6 7-6 (12-10).
“I was trying to give him a different look on serve. He was serving unbelievable at the start so I would try and throw him off his rhythm”, said Thompson.
