The International Tennis Federation has delayed that start to this year’s Billie Jean king Finals on safety grounds following a weather alert.
Hosts Spain were scheduled to get the competition underway on Wednesday against Poland in Malaga. However, a recent weather warning has forced organizers to move the match to later this week. As it currently stands, this decision has not affected any other ties in the competition.
“Due to a severe weather alert issued by local and regional authorities, the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup Finals first round tie between Spain and Poland, originally scheduled for today, 13 November at 1700, has been postponed.” The ITF said in a statement.
“This decision has been made based on guidance from the relevant authorities to ensure the health and safety of all participants and attendees.
“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding and cooperation.”
Spain’s Civil Protection Agency issued a notice to locals on Tuesday evening warning of ‘extreme risk of rainful.’ Malaga, as well as Velez and Estepona, are expected to be the worst hit. As a result, thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes. Other regions in the country are also on alert due to a new weather front arriving.
According to BBC News, more than 220 people were killed in recent days due to flash flooding in the Valencia region.
Spain will now play their opening tie on Friday from 9 am local time. Those who have tickets for the tie will be able to use them again for the rescheduled event. The tournament is being staged at the Palacios de Deportes Jose Maria Martin Carpena which is an indoor arena that has a capacity of just over 11,000.
Among those taking part in this year’s finals are world No.2 Iga Swiatek, Jasmine Paolini, Paula Badosa, Danielle Collins and Katie Boulter.
