Tomas Machac came back from one set down to beat Grigor Dimitrov 6-7 (5-7) 6-4 6-4 6-3 after 2 hours and 29 minutes in a hard-fought match in Vienna.
Machac broke serve in the fifth game ti take a 3-2 lead, but Dimitrov broke straight back to draw level to 3-3. Both players held on their next service games en route to the tie-break. Dimitrov came back from 3-5 down by reeling off four consecutive points to win the tie-break 7-5.
Machac converted his second break point in the second game to take a 2-0 lead. Dimitrov broke straight back on his third break point on his third break point and held serve at love to consolidate the break. Machac earned his second break in the eighth game and served out on his third match point.
“It was a great match and I am really happy that I could play against him. Because I was watching him a lot on TV when I was young. I am really happy with my performance and I think that both players played well”, said Machac.
Machach set up a second round match against Jack Draper, who beat Luciano Darderi 7-5 6-1.
