Lorenzo Musetti beat Lorenzo Sonego 6-3 6-2 in their first head-to-head clash after 1 hour and 13 minutes in the all-Italian first round match at the Erste Bank Open at the Stadthalle in Vienna.
Musetti won 83% of his first serve points and 88% of his second serve points. The Olympic bronze medallist hit 13 winners to 12 unforced errors. Sonego produced 12 winners but committed 22 errors.
Musetti earned three break points in the fourth game of the opening set, but Sonego saved them. Musetti converted his fourth break point with a backhand return winner. The world number 17 held on his next service game to win the first set 6-3.
Musetti went up an early break in the first game of the second set. He converted the first of his three break points with his forehand return in the third game to open up a 3-0 lead. Sonego saved a match point in the seventh game to hold serve at deuce, but Musetti served out the win at love in the next game.
Musetti will face Gael Monfils in a re-match of the first round clash at the Olympic Games in Paris. Monfils beat Quentin Halys 7-6 (7-5) 6-3. Halys earned an early break at love in the first game. Monfils converted his second break-back in the eighth game to draw level to 4-4. Both players held on serve en route to the tie-break. Halys started the tie-break with an early mini-break. Monfils opened up a 6-3 lead with two mini-breaks. Halys saved two set points but Monfils closed out the first set on his third set point. Monfils converted his second break point in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead. Monfils held his next two service games before breaking serve on his third match point in the ninth game to close out the second set 6-3.
