David Goffin upset Alexander Zverev 6-4 7-5 in 1 hour and 57 minutes to advance the quarter final at the Shanghai Rolex Masters.
Goffin has reached this stage at a Masters 1000 since the 2021 Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters.
Goffin converted his third break point in the third game to take a 2-1 lead. Zverev broke straight back at 15 to draw level to 2-2. Goffin earned his second break point in the seventh game to open up a 5-3 lead. Zverev saved two set points in the ninth game as he was serving to stay in the set, but Goffin served out at love in the 10th game.
Goffin broke serve in the third game to take a 2-1 lead. Zverev converted his second break-back point to draw level to 4-4. The German player saved three break points to hold serve at deuce. Goffin earned his second break in the 11thgame and served out the win on his first match point. The Belgian player has beaten a top 10 player for the first time since his win over Carlos Alcaraz in Astana in 2022.
Goffin will face Taylor Fritz, who cruised past Holger Rune 6-1 6-2 in just 55 minutes to book his spot in the quarter final. Fritz saved a break point before breaking twice in the second and fourth games to race out to a 5-0 lead. The US player served it out on his first set point.
Fritz went up a double break to open up a 5-2 lead and sealed the win on his fourth match point.
Fritz now leads 2-1 in his head-to-head series against Rune.
