Danil Medvedev rallies from a break down in both sets to beat Thiago Seyboth Wild in Shanghai

Danil Medvedev came back from a break down in the first and second sets to edge Thiago Seyboth Wild 7-5 7-5 at the Rolex Shanghai Masters. 

Medvedev avenged his defeat in his previous head-to-head against Seyboth Wild, who upset his Russian rival in the first round at last year’s Roland Garros. 

Seyboth Wild saved five break points in the first game before breaking Medvedev in the fourth game to take a 3-1 lead. Medvedev broke straight back in the sixth game to draw level to 3-3. Medvedev won three consecutive games from 4-5 down including a break in the 11th game to close out the first set 7-5. 

Seyboth Wild earned an early break in the second game of the second set to take a 2-0 lead. Medvedev broke straight back in the third game and held serve at 30 to draw level to 2-2. Medvedev completed the breal-back with a second break in the 11th game to take a 6-5 lead. Medvedev served out the win on his second match point. 

Seyboth Wild made 47 unforced errors to Medvedev’28. 

Medvedev set up a second round match against Matteo Arnaldi, who came back from one set down to beat Zachary Svajda 6-7 (2-7) 6-2 6-4. 

“I am happy I managed to stay composed in tough moments. He ha d a break in both sets. I managed to put on a lot of pressure and both times it worked at 5-5. I love Shanghai and I feel the people love me back. I enjoy it a lot to stay as long as possible”, said Medvedev. 

Stefanos Tsitsipas beat 2014 US Open Kei Nishikori 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 to reach the third round. Tsitsipas avenged his defeat against Nishikori, who beat his Greek opponent in the second round of the Masters 1000 tournament in Montreal.

Tsitsipas has drawn level to 2-2 in his four head-to-head matches. Tsitsipas has slipped out og the top 10 in the ATP Ranking after losing in early rounds in Miami, Montreal and Cincinnati.

“I wanted to put out a fight and I wanted to show that I can go out there and play a good match”, said Tsitsipas. 

Australian qualifier Alexander Vukic upset Casper Ruud 6-4 6-4 to move into the third round. Vukic broke serve in the seventh game to win the first set 6-4. Vukic broke serve in the third game of the second set to take a 2-1 lead. He saved three break points in the eighth game before closing out the win on his first match point.  

Tomas Martin Etcheverry beat Botic Van de Zandschulp 7-6 (7-5) 3-6 7-5 after 3 hours and 43 minutes in the longest match in Shanghai Rolex Masters history. Etcheverry has extended his lead to 2-0 over Van de Zandschulp in their head-to-head series. 

Etcheverry and Van de Zandschulp surpassed the previous record set by Marton Fucsovics and Felix Auger Aliassime. In that match Fucsovics beat his Canadian opponent in 3 hours and 23 minutes. 

Etcheverry will face either Jannik Sinner or Taro Daniel. 

Van de Zandschulp broke serve in the third game to take a 2-1 lead. Etcheverry broke straight back to draw level to 2-2. Van de Zandschulp earned his first first mini-break to open up a 2-0 lead. Etcheverry pulled back on serve to draw level to 2-2. Etcheverry earned a second break point to win the first set 7-5. 

Van de Zandschulp converted his fourth break point in the eighth game to win the second set 6-3. 

Etcheverry broke serve in the sixth game to take a 4-2 lead. Van de Zandschulp broke back after saving four match points. Etcheverry wrapped up the third set 7-5 on his fifth match point in the 12th game.
