World number 168 player Sofia Kenin beat Ana Bogdan 7-5 6-2 to set up a second round match against Diana Schnaider at the China Open in Beijing. Both players traded breaks in the first two games of the opening set. Kenin broke serve in the 12th game to win the first set 7-5. Both players traded breaks in the second and third games of the opening set. Kenin broke for the second time in the third game to take a 2-1 lead. The US player sealed the win with another break on her second match point.
Ukrainian qualifier Yulia Starodubtseva came back from 0-3 down to beat Laura Siegemund 6-4 7-6 (7-3) in 2 hours and 27 minutes.
Siegemund broke serve in the second game of the opening set to open up a 3-0 lead. Starodubtseva broke back in the fifth game for 2-3. Siegemund earned a second break in the sixth game to take a 4-2 lead, but Starodubtseva won four consecutive games to close out the first set 6-4.
Starobudtseva broke serve in the third game to take a 2-1 lead. Siegemund broke back in the fourth game to draw level to 2-2. Starobudtseva earned a second break to take a 4-2 lead. Siegemund broke back in the eighth game to draw level to 4-4. Both players traded breaks twice en route to the tie-break. Starobudtseva earned two mini-breaks to 4-1 lead. Siegemund pulled one break back for 2-4. Starobudtseva closed out the win with her third mini-break.
Starobudtseva reached her first tour-level quarter final in Monastir two weeks ago. She own a perfect 12-0 record in Grand Slam qualifying in 2024. She made her debut in the main draw in each Grand Slam tournament. She set up a second round match against Katerina Siniakova.
Taylor Townsend beat Martina Trevisan 6-2 4-6 6-3 to take her second win over her Italian player in the past month. Townsend broke twice in the second and eighth games to win the first set 6-2. Trevisan broke in the third game to win the second set 6-4. Trevisan started the third set with an early break in the first game. Townsend won four consecutive games to open a 4-1 lead with two breaks in the second and fourth games and sealed the win on her second match point.
Wang Xinyu beat lucky loser Mai Hontama 6-1 6-3.
