Danielle Collins is among a trio of seeded players at the Guadalajara Open who have suffered surprise losses in the second round.

Collins, who was the second seed in the draw, suffered a 6-3, 6-3, loss to Australian qualifier Olivia Gadecki who has reached the quarter-finals of a WTA event for the first time in her career. The American was broken four times during the match and only managed to win 32% (9/28) of her second service points. It is the first time she has lost to a player ranked outside of the top 150 this season.

“I’m really proud of myself for giving myself the chance to play another match and play such amazing players and really test my abilities,” said Gadecki, who also defeated Sloane Stephens in the first round.

It is the fourth match in a row that Collins has lost in the Tour. She hasn’t recorded a Tour-level win since Wimbledon when she reached the fourth round before falling to Barbora Krejcíkova, who went on to win the title. The 30-year-old is set to retire from the sport at the end of this season.

Gadecki will next play Italy’s Martina Trevisan who beat home player Renata Zarazúa 6-4, 6-3.

Another high-profile casualty is Veronika Kudermetova who was on the verge of victory before suffering a stunning loss. The Russian seventh seed had a 5-0 lead in the final set but ended up losing 6-7(5), 7-6(2), 7-5, to Colombia’s Camila Osorio. Osorio struggled with a shoulder issue and took a medical timeout before the final set.

Meanwhile, Victoria Azarenka retired injured from her clash against Kamilla Rakhimova when losing 2-6, 0-3. The reason for her retirement was a right shoulder injury. Rakhimova will next play Osorio.

As a result of the upsets, no seeded player has made it through to the last eight in the bottom half of the draw. In the top half, Jelena Ostapenko, Caroline Garcia, and Magdalena Frech are still active. All of those players are scheduled to play their second round matches on Thursday.

The Guadalajara Open is WTA 500 event after getting downgraded from 1000 status. It is being held at the Panamerican Tennis Center in Zapopan.
