Defending champions Italy were tested by Belgium but ultimately prevailed in a 2-1 victory to advance to the quarter-finals.
The Italian team is without world number one Jannik Sinner in Bologna this week but has had no problems so far as they backed up their win over Brazil by defeating Belgium.
There was an incredible performance from Belgium which started with 19 year-old Alexander Blockx pushing Matteo Berrettini to his limits as he lost to the former Wimbledon champion 2-6 6-2 7-5.
Belgium responded with Zizou Bergs defeating Flavio Cobolli 6-3 6-7(5) 6-0 to level the tie before Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori won the tie with a 7-6(2) 7-5 win over Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen.
It means that barring a catastrophic final match on Sunday against the Netherlands, Italy will qualify for the final eight in Malaga which will take place in late November.
Belgium will look to join Italy by beating Brazil and hoping the Italians win their match on Sunday.
Meanwhile in the other groups Argentina stunned Great Britain 2-1 in Manchester with Tomas Martin Etcheverry and Francisco Cerundolo winning their singles matches against Dan Evans and Jack Draper respectively.
It means Great Britain will have to defeat Canada 3-0 on Sunday if Argentina beat Finland on Saturday in order to progress.
In Valencia Carlos Alcaraz’s Spanish side have joined Australia in the final eight after defeating Spain.
However Alcaraz was not the main star of the tie as Roberto Bautista Agut came back from a set and 5-3 down to defeat Arthur Fils.
In Group A, USA and Germany have already qualified for Malaga and are facing off in Zhuahi on Saturday to determine who finishes as group winner.
