Defending champion and world number one Iga Swiatek has withdrawn from the China Open due to personal reasons.

The withdrawal in Beijing follows Swiatek’s absence in Seoul this week as the Pole is feeling the effects of a long season.

In a statement Swiatek said that the withdrawal was due to personal reasons and apologised to her fans in China, “Due to personal matters, I’m forced to withdraw from the China Open in Beijing,” Swiatek was quoted by the WTA website as saying.

“I’m very sorry as I had an amazing time playing and winning this tournament last year and was really looking forward to being back there. I know that the fans will experience great tennis there and I’m sorry I won’t be a part of it this time.”

Swiatek has won four of the eight WTA 1000 events played this year but won’t be competing in Beijing this year.

The world number one’s last tournament was at the US Open when she lost to Jessica Pegula in the quarter-finals.

Coco Gauff, Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina and Jessica Pegula are still competing in Beijing which will start on the 25th September.
