Danil Medvedev beat Adrian Mannarino 7-6 (8-6) 6-2 to reach the quarter final at the China Open in Beijing.
Medvedev converted his second break point in the fourth game and held serve at love to take a 4-1 lead. Mannarino pulled back on serve in the seventh game to draw level to 4-4. Medvedev saved two break points at 5-5. Both players traded mini-breaks on the third and fourth points to draw level to 2-2.
Medvedev went down a set point at 5-6 in the tie-break of the first set, but he saved it when Mannarino missed a return. Medvedev won the final three points to close out the tie-break 8-6.
After a trade of breaks at the start of the second set Medvedev hit a forehand down the line to break Mannarino’s serve for the second time to take a 3-2 lead. Medvedev won four consecutive games from 2-2 including a third break to close out the win on his first match point after 1 hour and 41 minutes. Medvedev drew level to 4-4 in his head-to-head matches against Mannarino.
Medvedev hit eight aces and won 80% of his first serve points. He converted four of his six break points.

Medvedev set up a quarter final match against Flavio Cobolli, who beat Pavel Kotov 6-4 6-2. Cobolli saved a break point in the fourth game before breaking serve in the fifth game. The Italian player held on his next serve to win the first set 6-4. Cobolli broke twice in the first and seventh games to win the second set 6-2 and served out the win on his first match point.
Medvedev beat Cobolli in straight sets in their first head-to-head match in the third round at this year’s edition of the US Open.
