Daniil Medvedev has continued the winning feeling as he defeated Gael Monfils 6-3 6-4 in Beijing to boost his ATP Finals qualification hopes.
Medvedev took 92 minutes to dispatch the Frenchman in straight sets and secure victory in Beijing.
Last year’s finalist remains in fourth for the Nitto ATP Finals with fifth placed Taylor Fritz losing early in Tokyo.
That means more wins in China will see Medvedev qualify for Turin and after his victory over Monfils, Medvedev spoke about continuing the winning feeling heading into the latter stages of the season, “Honestly the wins are, in a way, not important, because it depends how many tournaments you play, but it’s still good to win a lot of matches,” Medvedev told the ATP website.
“So I’m happy that I’ve managed to continue winning matches. I still have some tournaments to go, so I have the chance to bring the tally even higher. I try to be consistent throughout the year. Sometimes I’m more consistent, sometimes less, but that’s what I’m trying to do.”
Now Medvedev will play Adrian Mannarino in the second round as he looks to claim his first Beijing title.
There was a scare for Andrey Rublev in Beijing as he came through 6-0 4-6 6-4 against Pablo Carreno Busta with Rublev also aiming to secure a spot in Turin.
Next for Rublev will be Alejandro Davidovich Fokina as the fourth seed looks to win his third title of the season.
