Ben Shelton saved a match point to beat Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-7 (6-8) 7-6 (9-7) 6-3 after 2 hours and 52 minutes at the Cincinnati Open.
Etcheverry earned a match point on his serve at 7-6 in the second set tie-break after Shelton missed on three straight set points at 6-3.
Shelton converted the second of his eleven break point with an inside-out forehand to take a 5-3 lead and served out the win at love in the ninth game.
Shelton set up a second round match against Fabian Maroszan, who came back from a set down to beat Grigor Dimitrov 4-6 6-4 6-3. Dimitrov broke serve in the fifth game to win the first set 6-4. Maroszan broke serve in the sixth game of the second set to take a 4-2 lead. Dimitrov broke straight back in the seventh game. Maroszan closed out the second set with a break in the the 10th game. Maroszan earned the decisive break in the seventh game and wrapped up the win on his first match point.
The match between Carlos Alcaraz and Gael Monfils was interrupted by rain. Alcaraz earned a break in the fourth game to take a 3-1 lead and sealed the first set on his fourth set point in the 10th game. Alcaraz saved a set point on serve on serve at 5-6 in the second set to force a tie-break. Monfils went up a 3-1 in the tie-break before players were forced from the court.
