A day after pulling out of his singles match at Wimbledon, Andy Murray has entered the mixed doubles draw where he will be playing alongside Emma Raducanu.
Murray, who is a two-time champion in singles, had been in a race to be fit in time for the grass-court major in what will likely be the last he plays before retiring. The former world No.1 had recently undergone surgery to treat an issue which was affecting his right leg. Despite making progress, Murray’s camp confirmed that he isn’t ready to play singles matches yet.
However, he has entered into the doubles draw with his brother Jamie and is now in the mixed doubles with British No.1 Raducanu. It is only the fourth time Murray has opted to play in the event and the first since 2019 when he partnered up with Serena Williams. The duo made it through to the third round.
“Doubles is a slightly different game in terms of the physicality of it and I am looking forward to that,” Murray told reporters earlier this week.
Meanwhile, Raducanu will be playing in a Grand Slam doubles event for the first time in her career. Outside of the Billie Jean King Cup, the 21-year-old has only played one doubles match on the WTA Tour, which was back in 2022 at the Citi Open in Washington.
“I think the biggest advice is just how he’s always taken care of his operations, how he manages his people,” Raducanu said of Murray earlier this week.
“I haven’t really spoken to him so much. I think for me it’s just like watching him operate day to day, watching him be absolutely on it with everything.
“Even in practice now, he’s so on it to the minute.
“I think me, when I was a bit younger maybe, showing up 15 minutes before practice to do a few arm curls, swing my hand around and warm up, he’s there for an hour and a half doing treatment.
“He just sets really good examples.”
The mixed doubles event is scheduled to start on July 5th.
