Can Iga Swaitek break Chris Evert’s Grand Slam tally of 18? Is Naomi Osaka back to her best? Was Carlos Alcaraz’s tactical approach inspired by his coach?
These are some of the questions that have arisen from this year’s French Open. Swiatek claimed the women’s title for a fourth time in her career with a straight sets win over surprised finalist Jasmine Paolini, who has made her top 10 debut this week. Throughout the tournament, Swiatek dropped only one set which was in the second round to Osaka. She is the first woman since Serena Williams to win the same major event three years in a row.
In the men’s tournament, Carlos Alcaraz scored back-to-back five-sets wins over new No.1 Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev en route to glory. He has become the youngest man in history to have won a Grand Slam trophy on all three surfaces at the age of 21.
Besides the champions, Roland Garros also provided plenty of other talking points. Including Novak Djokovic’s late-night match and unfortunate injury two days later. He now faces a race again time to be fit for Wimbledon which started during the first week of July.
